Use of bandwidth

Can anyone give me the exact explanation for Bandwidth on router interfaces .I just know that it is the maximum throughput allowed , does it has to do anything with the speed negotiation .Isn't it constant always unless we change , regardless of the speed?

The Bandwidth command on router interfaces does not change the bit transmission speed on the interface. The Bandwidth command is used by routing protocols to calculate the metric. You can manipulate metric by changing the Bandwidth on interfaces.
