DNS over VPN

I see a lot of people post about this problem on various forums around the net. What I have is a VPN set up where I'm just passing VPN info through a cable modem, then a firewall and to an internal server running 2012r2. Usually when I do this its no big deal and I just get around it with a hosts file edit to point an internal IP address to the appropriate server host name, problem solved.

What I want to know is, where is the problem and how do I get DNS to properly resolve the internal addresses. I can ping the IP, but not the host name. Even if I set all the config settings to manual and input the internal DNS server I still find the the clients Windows 10 are using "their own ISP" DNS.

I spent a few more hours on it and seem to have found a fix that should work. I unchecked the setting on the VPN server side "use default gateway on remote client". This seems to have solved my problem. If anyone knows why this isn't a good way to get my result let me know.

    Thanks,
