CRT monitors and aspect ratio.

Quick odd-ball question for everyone. Unless I'm mistaken your typical CRT monitor has an aspect ratio of 4:3, and common resolutions include 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200.

Now if you break down all of those resolutions three of them give you an aspect ratio of 4:3, which is inline with CRT monitors. However, 1280x1024 gives you an AR of 4:3.2, which is slightly off-spec. In order to maintain a 4:3 AR with a 1280 width screen you need a vertical height of 960. Yet I never hear anyone refer to this resolution.

So my question is why, if this resolution yields an AR that is not inline with a CRT's 4:3 AR, why is it the "recommended" resolution on just about every CRT you'll find in the store?
