It really is going to depend a lot on the job and the company. And it will depend on what you were doing for the past 3 years. Many companies will do background checks and even if they do not - lying about your background is rarely ever a good idea.

Don't lie, but find a way to frame your most recent job as IT related. I bet you still worked with computers. Use it.

All depends on what you apply for. What have you been doing? While off, did you keep up with technology etc?

The big question is what have you been doing.

I personally would not make anything up. If you were working say where and if you were not say why. Just make sure you have an answer for that time and find a job that is willing to accept it.

May I ask why you left your last job? and what were you doing during that time? I'm in a similar boat, I usually just make something up like took care of a loved one, get certifications, classes, etc. People on here will say don't lie but in all honestly what I do in my time is no one's business, just like it's not my business on what the employer did during there time. So Just come up with a story when/if asked.

when my son was little, I only held part-time jobs and there was a time I was off almost a year. I volunteered at my son's school helping with their website. I said that and most employers took that pretty well.

Be completely honest. If I hired you and found out later you weren't honest on your resume I wouldn't trust you anymore and that would be a strike against letting you go. Honesty is a very key trait that you need to maintain. I trust most anyone until they give me a reason not to.

You can enhance your resume and make it sound good, but be able to stand by everything stated. Have you done anything IT related since 2015? If so put that on your resume if it can help. If not don't worry about it. You can explain that you are looking to get back into IT.

Don't let your MCSA expire, see about updating it to a newer one. Include your past certs on your resume. You can state something like, "Obtained CompTIA Net+ and A+ certifications". This let's your employer know that you have reached those certs but doesn't specifically state their status of expired.

Some employers may even look at it as a way to get you at a lower rate with an agreement of a raise after you ramp back up. Who knows. Good luck...

so i my last IT position was at the end of 2015, i would just like to know what to expect when on an interview. how much would employers care? I still have my MCSA in windows 7 which i believe most businesses will use, my A+ and Net+ expired. should i fluff up the resume and add some experience in the past two years, or simply tell them the true and hope they understand. i know alot of people arent the most honest on their resume

thank you for any and all responses

They would want to know why you left IT for 3 years?

Define fluff. You shouldn't lie on your resume. You don't have list everything on your resume, just the key points that grabs the interviewers attention.

If I was hiring you I would ask you..

What technologies are you studying now in your free time?

What technologies are you interested in the most?

Why did you leave IT, and why do you want to come back?

You might need to do a few contracts before you can get brought on full time at a company. I could be wrong though.
