Can disk defrag(or any defrag program) cause a hard drive to crash?

I haven't had that experience. If the drive crashes during defrag, it was probably destined to crash anyway.
If something "goofy" does happen during defrag, running CHKDSK /R from Recovery Console will probably put everything back in order.
