"cmd" question...

I don't know how to ask this question but: What controls the DOS prompt screen? I try to type the cmd command in Start-->Run. The screen shows up for a split second and it disappears without letting me type anything. What's going on??

There is an autorun registry key that may be causing your problem

HKCU / Software / Microsoft / Command Processor / Autorun

Whatever is set in this key runs automatically when the command prompt is opened (so I set mine to "cd\" so it always opens at the root).

It depends on the OS. They don't all recognize cmd. Try typing command instead of cmd....

You could have bad autoexec.nt or config.nt files.

Also, I found a Windows update that set my friend's machine too strict where he couldn't run any activeX based websites or add user accounts to his XP. It also caused command prompt problems. There was a reg script on Microsoft's support site that relaxed the restrictions some to get a normal machine again.
