security consulting/bidding on Gov. contracts

I know this is a highly competitive area, but I am at a point where I feel like being a consultant, building a clientele and starting my own company is the path I truly want to embark on. I have tried googling the best steps to take, even personally asked someone in this space for mentor-ship.. both efforts have been futile. Any advice on the best way to approach this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

SANS instructor Ted Demopoulos is a successful consultant who spends a lot of time sharing his knowledge in this area. He has both free and paid content worth checking out. He even does 1-1 coaching.

be good at writing to RFPs, and it helps if you already know the customer so you can tailor it specifically to them. being a good proposal writing is something you'll want to develop
