VTP

what is the role of VTP? I am using afew books and the CBT videos but they are all taking the definition in a different direction, im missing the concreat understanding of it's job.

One book seems to be saying that VTP is used to configure multiple switches with similar VLAN configurations.

CBT are saying that VTP is used as a map so that switches will be aware of vlans in other switches.

Can anybody draw the line between all those?

Thanks for your time

VTP's role in a layer 2 environment is to remove some of the administrative burden associated with maintaining VLANS. VTP is used to map VLANS across all VTP configured switches automatically, enabling VLAN consistency throughout a network.

So if you have VLANs 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,99,101,444 all configured on the vlan database of the VTP server, any client that is also configured properly will receive a VTP advertisement from the VTP server and it will add the following VLANS above to its own VLAN database.
    Now working full time!

unless the client is in transparent mode of course.

    Thanks! feels much better now

Well VTP is basically a VLAN trunking Protocol ,which is basically used to transfer VLAN information between different Switches in the given domain.SO its mainly decreases the administrative effort of the administrator. The Administrator just need to add Vlans on 1 switch in the domain.By enabling VTP ,the information about vlans that has been made on 1 switch will be propagated to all other switches in the given domain.
    Configuration:
To configure it You need to make 1 switch part of a VTP Domain and u need to configure its role as VTP server that will propagate or broacast the information abt the Vlans to all other switches in the Domain.other switches need to be the member of given domain and they must be configure as Client, otherwise they won't acquire information abt VLANs in the given domain. So in this way all other switches get the information abt all the vlans in the domain and Administrator dont have to manually add the Vlans to each switch individually.
So VTP is basically used to reduce the administrative effort.
