Confusion About Route Target and Route Distinguisher

I understand that the PE router will import and export RT.
That is how they identify the routes to accept or reject.

In that case why is the RD for?
Why is it necessary?
What happens if it is not configured?
Also why does RD have a format of ASN:NN but RT can have arbitrary values?
