I remember learning how to do this the hard way with lots of practice and then the same instructor shared the calculator afterwards lol. It became fun once it finally clicked in my head.

My epiphany of how IP subneting worked was when I began to visualize the IPv4 address space as a grid in a
treemap
, with each subnet as a rectangle, and how the map changed when the CIDR value changed. This gives a visual explanation of subnetting behavior like, "why does changing the CIDR from /16 to /15 double the number of host IP address?"

I learned the subnet in your head technique from todd lamlle when I did my CCNA in 2006....but yeah use a calculator
