Dynamic update ? on techexams test

your answer to this ? is that you need to have an interent connection and IE 4.0 installed to do dynamic updates but I have noticed more often then not that you will not be able to use dynamic updates w/o IE 5.0 installed for windows 98/ME... for windows XP this may be correct and I understand that this is a XP test but the ? does not specify Windows XP

By dynamic update, do you really mean automatic update? The former is usually referred to updating the DNS with the workstation's host name mapped to its IP. 98/ME cannot do this alone though the DHCP can help them out.
If you are taking an XP test, then I would imagine you would be tested on updating XP, not 98/ME. If I recall, release version of XP started with IE 5.0, which may be the reason for the answer.
Now the server or networking exams I could see testing you on automatic updates, as well as SUS.
