Probably sounded real cool way back when, when there were no other tests like it. It either comes from the school-grade, saying you're an "A+ technician", as in "very good." Or it's a terrible, terrible joke on the former, and on the C++ programming language name. Either way it's not. . . eh. . . descriptive, is it?

CompTIA originally started out as ABCD "A Better Computer Dealer". It was an effort to standardize all vendor repair tests.

Then in the mid 90s, Novell started this thing called certification. CompTIA followed suit and shortened the name to A+Certified Service Technician. It has since been shortened to just A+.
