Difference between smurf and ping of death ?

Can anyone explain the difference between a smurf attack and a ping-of-death attack ? I have a printout of the technotes, the Syngress book, etc and have researched this, but it is still confusing to me. I have my test tomorrow and would appreciate any clarification.

A Ping of Death is one large icmp packet over 65k, a Smurf attack is many small icmp packets hitting the computer.
