Licensing question

This is for W2K3 Server and W2K Server....
Does anyone know what Microsofts policy (If any) they have with Disaster Recovery Licenses?

We have some software vendors that allow us to install their software on a machine stored off site (machine is turned off of course) so that in the event of an emergency the machine can be brought up quickly and we can be operational in a short ammount of time.

Does MS have anything similar to this? We are currently implementing a Disaster recover Plan and part of that plan is to have extra server stored off site... I unfortunately do not know weather or not we need to buy a new a new license or not....

In addition to this we were going to turn the machine on once a month to do a replication with the PDC and to get updates ect....

That you can just have the server mirrored and you are not in licence violation unless you turn that server on and run it for more then the 30 day activation period.

Well, lets analize the situation:

You do require a Windows Server license... thats a must...

Now, if you don't use the server or use it only when the other one is off-line... then you should need only one license.

Now, if the other server is active and connected... maybe you should get at least the server license, since, like bcairns said, your activation period will expire.

If you don't have SA, then you have to have another license for the server.
