The Computer Merchant???

Anyone ever hear anything about the company,The Computer Merchant, good or bad? I just received a call with a possible oppurtunity for a job, but I'm always a bit wary of recruiting firms. Everything sounds good, except the distance to travel to work, but it shouldn't be that bad. I'm coming off a job that gave me a company car, so driving was an everyday thing, just not with my own brand new truck. I think I'm to be setup for a phone interview tomorrow, and possibly start next week. It's also apparently a two year contract, with extension possible afterwards. The company I;d be working for is a large international finance firm, doing desktop support/break-fix stuff, is what I've been told. It's not exactly what I want, but it's more IT related than I was in prior. I don't want to be stuck doing junk work for two years, but if it pans out, it may open a lot of doors.....any comments anyone??

Thanks....

Break/fix desktop support will give you network experience since you will be dealing with network issues too. A 2 yr contract is rare. I say go for it.

From the look sof their website, they seem to be a recruiting company. Do you know if you're working directly with them, or at another company?

As far as I know, they are just a staffing agency/recruiter. I'd be working for the actual client from what I can tell. I'll have more info later today hopefully. I'm waiting on a callback from one of the upper level managers at the agency. I'll ask a few more questions then. The first time the guy called I was at Dunkin Donuts, so I didn't exactly have the best setting to discuss anything really.....

If your trying to get your feet in the door you have to do the dirty work sometimes. see i attend school and work(factory) and i volunteer with the geek squad so i could get some hands on experience. I t just looks better when you can lists your experiences with computers as some hands on experience.

I spent the last 2 1/2 years doing POS support onsite, so I have plenty of hardware experience. It's that damn software stuff......this position is actually more hardware based, so I can do what I know, and still have an oppurtunity to keep learning and expand my avenues for the future. I'll probably hear from them tomorrow again......

Don't forget to weigh up cost of petrol for the distance you'll now be driving in your own vehicle. It can make the difference! If you have the chance to learn and gain experience, that could assist you if anything else for that company comes us, i.e. a network admin type position.

Personally, I would probably give it a shot!

I did give the gas thing some thought. I have a V8 in my truck, and it's about 50 miles per day. If I get asked to go to another site, which would be rare, I get mileage costs. I'm getting other offers, so I may have a better choice. We'll see......soon I hope....I need $$$, more $$$...hahaha don't we all!..... icon_cool.gificon_lol.gif

Well I had a second phone interview today. I guess it went well. The "big" guy said I could be a good fit. I'm still not sure if I want to drive so far. It's going almost 40 miles each way. Not too far, but I've been getting a load of calls since my resume went online. Hopefully, something will come up. I'm going in tomorrow for a possible 6 week contract to perm position real close to my home, so that would be good.
