looking for good lab scenarios

I'm just getting started self studying for the CCNA. I find much info on choosing the hardware, but much less on what training to do on the hardware after I get it. I would like to find a structured program that does a good job of covering the most important points. Ideally, the scenarios would build upon each other and/or would include additional explanatory information beyond the texts I am using (cisco press and sybex).

These are some of the ideas for lab scenarios I have come across. Has anyone used any of these? Does anyone have a better suggestion?

1) CCNA Practical Studies by Heap/Maynes (4/10/02). Comments are that it is out of date in some areas.
2) Labs and Study Guide (and Companion Guide) books - from the Networking Academy. Can these books be used effectively for self study if you are not actually registered in the Academy?
3) What about taking scenarios from a simulator and doing them myself (my equip permitting)?
4) Labs on cisco kits cd?
5) thebryantadvantage - he says he has a good lab scenario workbook.
6) Make up my own scenarios as I read about a topic.

A side topic - cisco press came out with a second edition of Odom's INTRO book on 5/17/06 and a 'Video Mentor' on 8/23/06. Does anyone know if these books have sustantial new content to justify buying or are they pretty much the same as earlier editions?

    1. Since there are plenty of other choices I'd stay away from outdated material.

    2. I'm sure they are as long as you have a good book (i.e. Cisco or Sybex).

    3. If you already have the sim (i.e. the Boson sim) that should work fine. They usually don't explain much though.

    4. I had a quick look at the list of labs on the cd that came with my 2950, and it seems they cover a wide range of scenarios for different setups.

    5. Also have a look at TrainSignal's labs, Bryant writes for them as well.

    6. Regardless of any others, item 6 is a very good thing to do.

There's a bunch of info (link to other topics) regarding setting up a home lab in our CCNA FAQ:
