Need Some Help

Hey everyone. I signed up to take the A+ Hardware exam in November. Since they are changing the tests for the new year, does that mean I have to take the software portion by the end of the year as well? If I don't, then is that hardware test for nothing? Thanks for the help.

    Hey, welcome to TechExams!

Yeah, I think the mix-n-match deadline is Jan 1, 2007

So that means you have to take both tests to be certified if you want to on the 2003 track.

    Good luck!

Remember, do lots of practice questions, get lots of sleep, and plenty of passion for why you're doing it!

You still got like 2 months before the deadline, if you prepare properly, it shouldnt be a problem.

I know for a fact that CompTIA can be a little quirky. One thing you might want to do is find out if you'll still qualify for the certification if you schedule the software exam for the end of the year, and if you can reschedule it, if need be. For example, if you schedule the software exam for late December, then call them and have it pushed back into January, if the exam would still be valid for your cert. (Stranger things have happened, and it tends to work with their promotions and discounts.)

I'd recommend just taking both and getting them done.

If you are experienced with the material, you could schedule your exam and likely pass it without much difficulty then your done and can move forward with other exams.

If you failed, you'd have time to schedule a new exam prior to the deadline.

    ****

HOWEVER, if you just learning the material I wouldn't merely sign up to beat the deadline. Invest the time and learn the material throughly. Make yourself a more valuable employee.

Do you homework. As Slowhand suggested, contact CompTIA and determine what happens if you sign up and need to reschedule it into the new year.

Personally, I wouldn't play that game. Either take it now (or this year) or delay until you are prepared. You win either way. :)

Thanks for the help guys. I am new to the IT field, and I don't think taking both tests will be a possibility as I just haven't grasped the software side of the cert yet. I will try the reschedule deal, and if they won't do that, then I will just reschedule the test and take the new one. Thanks everyone for their help.

Ok so I called ProMetric to see if my 2003 A+ voucher could be used instead to take the 2006 version. They told me to contact CompTia, even though it was their voucher. Then CompTia told me it was up to Prometric. Then I asked the first Prometric person if I just took the 03 hardware test, could I take the software version past Jan 1st. She responded with a no. Then I asked the same question to a comptia person and they said no, although they both sounded unsure. Then I asked a different Prometric person, and he told me they could let me take the 03 software version after the new year, that it would be ok. Boy I wish they could all get on the same page!

Well they are not merely updated the type of exam to the next revision they are actually changing the exam 'collection' to where there are 4 exams to select from...so maybe this is why it is 'uncertain'.

First, I wouldn't plan on being able to split the exam into 2007 without it in writting from BOTH.

So, plan on taking it this year and completing it....or just wait and take the first round of new exams.

There is really not the need to stress too much over this, your time is better spend on study and not tracking down something that may or may not happen 2 months from now. IMNSHO

Plenty of time. You need to use the OS to have the hardware be worth anything and without the hardware your OS is useless. I've long been a fan of taking both exams the same day...because a tech will have those skills because that's how one works on PCs as they arrive.

But if you cannot get the information in writing...you may find yourself stuck with one 2003 exam and still needing to take 2 from 2007.
