Career move - need your help

Hello everyone,

As you guys know I have been active in searching for a new position for a few months now.

I talked to a friend who does IT software consulting for a company and he referred me to one of their new positions - Hardware support.

Everything is great - except they run everything on Linux. My only experience is in Windows.

The position would require me to support their infrastructure and create a back up plan for all their users.

They said they would provide training and that I would have to get Linux certified right away.

The second part of the job is to train on their software and I would deal w/ the customers and fly out to their locations when needed.

They will let me know tomorrow if they want me in this position and offer a Salary.

How hard is it to switch from Windows and to learn Linux?

What do you guys think about the opportunity and would you go for it?

I have to make a decision fast if they offer me the job.

Wanted everyones thoughts - thanks again!

Learn as much Linux as you can - it will help you tremendously.

As far as the difficulty of the switch - Windows and Linux CLI are 2 different worlds, but knowing Linux gives you more leverage & career strength in the IT world. Of course, the Windows stuff is assumed - knowing Linux differentiates you - if you can handle Linux, then you can handle IT. Same goes for Cisco.

It's great to know Windows well, but there is even higher regard for those who know Linux & Cisco.

    My 2 Cents.

It sounds like a great opportunity if they are really willing to train you. What do you currently do for a living? Do you have a fall-back plan if you try this and it does not work out? Are you supporting yourself only or a family too?
All things are possible, only believe.

    Thanks MW!

Spr - I have a fiancee and we are getting married next summer. I am currently a lead IT Tech for a university - however their is no room to grow their - that is why I am looking for another position.

If this does not work out - I would have to search out another job - however I do learn fast - right now working on building a Linux machine from scratch - however its a tough decision.
