Free Line Art Program

I am looking for a program that can convert photos to black/white line art drawings (think of author pictures in newspapers). Does anyone have a suggestion on a program to do this (free would be nice).

There are a few cool little image manipulation programs around but my personal favorite and yes...It's free is the GIMP

I have never tried doing what you are describing but I am pretty sure this program can do it.

I'm not sure if it does half-tone images like you need, but Paint.NET is an astonishingly professional paint program that is both free and comes with 100K+ lines of C# source code.
