dynamips
I currently have a 4 router setup, using a 12.4 IOS image for these 7200's. I am not doing anything special, but when I have all 4 routers running it takes up 100% CPU and is slow as sh*t. I have a decent PC AMD 64 3700+ with 2GB ram, so I dont think that is the problem. Does everyone elses run this slow? I am not sure if its my idlepc value, what are others using?

mikej412 Member Posts: 10,086 ■■■■■■■■■■With 5 routers running on my Core 2 2000 laptop with 2GB I idle around 10-15% when I'm not doing anything on the "routers."
I messed up the first time and had multiple routers running... and wrote a value to the db without checking the CPU utilization. I nuked the db ini and started over.....
When I followed the instructions in the Dynamips / Dynagen Tutorial, I was given just one "good value" -- and it is. I've only run it for my biggest/baddest 7200 image so far. I'll be changing to a 3640 image later which will need it's own idlepc value.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -

Ahh I was running 0.60 for Dynagen (and older version), thats why it did not support idlepc!
Anyways I have IOS - c7200-adventerprisek9-mz.124-9.T1.bin
idlepc value - 0x62998c80 it now runs around 0-5% on my laptop.
Now it is time to get home from work and build a killer labNow working full time! -
Humper Member Posts: 647I have been curious about this, and think this would be a good discussion. Do you believe that the prices for lab equipment on ebay will drop considerably because of dynamips? I can use dynamips instead of spending $200-400 on a Cisco 3640....Now working full time!

about learning cisco are the ones who buy the labs in the first place, and if your serious, you will still want some physical routers as dynamips cant do everything.Next year i plan to buy a couple of powerful desktops with some nic cards to connect with my real routers.Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$ -

Humper Member Posts: 647since my lab setup consists of 10 routers, I decided it was a good time to purchase two 19" widescreen LCD's. It was a good decision indeed, as I have one pod on the left monitor and another pod on the right. I will post my lab on the forums here as it follows the lab from the Diana Teare / Catherine Paquet book. Now working full time!
