linux vmware setup

i need a little help setting up a linux pc. i want to run vmware on it with 2 w2k servers.

I can install linux but the vmware setup i need the help with

You are running VMWare Player/Workstation/Server on a Windows 2000 Server computer and you want to run a Linux image in VMWare, or do you want to run VMWare on a Linux system and run Windows 2000 Server in VMWare? VMWare runs on both Windows and Linux, and from your description I'm not sure what your setup is.

Many Linux releases also include a VMWare image with their distribution. You just run the pre-configured image, maybe only needing to adjust the amount of RAM used. The sites http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php and http://distrowatch.com/ should have the flavor of the Linux LiveCD you need.

If you want to run Linux natively on a Windows 2000/XP system without using a virtualization environment, try coLinux (http://www.colinux.org/).

OK, Windows 2000 is in the VMWare Workstation running on Linux. What setup problems are you having? Usually network connectivity is the tricky thing. Do you have the latest version of VMWare?

i had this issue a long while ago. my thought it to add 2 nics and have each virtual server have its own nic.

i'll be working on this setup tonight just wanting to get the plan and implementation information together before hand. i'll read up on those links you posted today.

Those links are for running Linux in VMWare Workstation, which is what I assumed you were trying to do, not running VMWare Workstation on Linux, which is what you are actually doing. VMWare's site should have all the docs you need for setting up VMWare on Linux.

And yes, you can have two running instances of VMWare Workstation, each using a different physical NIC on the same machine. It's all rather easy with static IP addresses. With dynamic addressing, you may want to have the DHCP server assign VMWare instances IP addresses from an address pool separate from the physical machines on your network. That can be a little tricky to set up.

I believe VNC works on both, but not positive.

Yes, there are several VNC client/server implementations that run on Windows, Linux/UNIX, and MacOS. I use RealVNC (http://realvnc.com/download.html).

Have you looked at the vmware documentation, it's pretty good.
