Hi everyone ! I want to reinstall the os (windows 2000 Professional) to a desktop computer but I also need to keep the existing configuration like the installed software, setting and user data. How can I accomplish this goal? Many thanks!

Actually, what I want to know is any other better methods than reinstallation. Since I have already tried to reinstall the OS. The IE of that desktop still cannot access https link. I also upgrade the version of the IE from 5.X to 6.X Sp1. But it won't work. Another main reason is that I need to keep the configuration of the desktop.

Many people with certifications have no practical idea how to apply what they've been certified in. Why do you think employers put so much value in previous experience?

to the OP, why don't you just re-install the programs that you have installed? That's a part of formatting - you start from scratch. This is why people make baseline images of their systems, so that instead of having to re-do everything when they format they can just re-image their disk drive.

That desktop is not under my control. It's my boss. He has no idea to backup any peice of important data and he insist not to perform a clean installation. Moreover, some of the application installed on that desktop has lost the original source copy.
that is the situation I encontered.

You can manually backup his data, reinstall the OS, reinstall the apps he still has the source for, and basically tell him "sorry, you'll have to repurchase the ones you lost and reinstall them". It will be a manual and labor intensive process, but I think it's your only choice.

BTW - He's not using Norton Internet Security 2001 or Norton Personal Firewall 2001 is he?

Is your company using a proxy, and if so, is his browser configured to use different settings for HTTP and secure?

Have you tried a different browser like firefox, to rule out it being an OS setting as opposed to an IE setting?

Have you tried a system file check "sfc /scannow" or tried doing a repair install? That would retain all software and user settings.

But your problem can probably be fixed without a fresh install.

Thanks for all of your opinion. I have installed FireFox to replace the IE. It seems to solve the problem. The network has a proxy server and I have configured the IE to access internet via the proxy server. All http link are accessible, only those link with https is access denied with IE.

Where you change the connection settings in IE to configure a proxy, there is an advanced button. Is there a different or incorrect setting in the advanced area for Secure HTTP?

I have checked the settings inside the "Advanced" tab. The settings are identical with another desktop under the same domain which can access https. icon_eek.gif
