MDI, MDI-X Ports

Can someone explain the difference between MDI and MDI-X ports. Is it true that PC and servers are MDI? Are these ports used for uplinking switches and hubs? If so, is the port that the computer plugs into 1x, 2x etc...the same or is their a difference. Thanks
