Remote assistance help needed

I'm trying to do a remote assistance session with a relative, but it doesn't work with me being the expert. The connection never establishes. I get the following message
"Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote host name could not be resolved. Please try again"
If the relative takes on the role of the expert and I submit a remote assistance request everything works fine.
What I've tried so far.
1. Turn on remote assistance on the relatives p.c.
2. Have relative turn off zone alarm.
3. Have relative turn off windows firewall
4. Try connection with my dsl router eliminated, relative doesn't have router (direct adsl connection)
5. Sniff traffic with ethereal, and it looks like there is some communication with the far end.
Does anyone have any ideas of what else I might be able to try, short of driving there and troubleshoot with the pc's back to back?

I believe it's a Speedstream (only know that because I used to put them in). We use PPPoE to get connected.
Internal or external? Is it configurable by using his browser pointed to http://192.168.0.1 for example? I don't know if they have any built in firewalling, port forwarding, filtering, etc.All things are possible, only believe. -

You're right. Forgot about that. All the modems are external, but in the last year or so we started installing the type that could be programmed. I think the relative has the old type installed (the one that can't be programmed) but I'll have to go there and check. He won't know what to look for. Thanks.
