I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I'm a little over a week away from taking my INTRO and i came accross a practice test on CISCO's website. I got one question wrong which i'm not sure why. Here is the question and answers below:
What type of cable should be used to connect an ethernet host directly to a Router?
a) Rollover Cable
b) Console Cable
c) Crossover Cable
d) Straight Through Cable
e) Null Modem Cable
I selected D. According to the quiz that was wrong and the correct answer is C - Crossover cable. I thought Cross over cables were only used when connecting devices on the same OSI Layer such as Switch to Switch or PC to PC. I'm a little confused. Can someone please explain.
Thanks

georgemc Member Posts: 429Crossover over cable are used to connect "like" devices. In this case a router and a PC are considered like devices. I.E. they're end devices while a switch/hub is what they would typically connect to. You can also look at it as your router/PC are DTE devices while your switch/hub is a DCE devices. DTE to DTE or DCE to DCE would use a crossover cable while a DCE to DTE would use a straight-thru cable.
