Trouble reconciling two sentences

I'm using Bill Ferguson's Net+ Fast Pass (not the only thing I'm using, I have a set from
Sybex, but this one is small and travels well), and in reviewing the OSI model, I came across this statement about IPX:

"IPX is not a routable protocol and it is connectionless." Not a problem, I can grasp that.

Then this statement about RIP:

"RIP is responsible for the establishment of routes for IPX addressing. It facilitates communication between routers to calculate the most efficient routes between teh source and teh destination ont eh IPX/SPX network."

If IPX is not routable, how is it routed? This is the first time I've seen this conflicting information, I've been studying it off and on for a couple of years.
Makin' it happen regardless...
