Paul Boz Member Posts: 2,620 ■■■■■■■■□□It's basically a 56k modem, not really. I've got a box of them in storage at work (like probably over 30-40) and I've got to say, they're pretty worthless.CCNP | CCIP | CCDP | CCNA, CCDA

dtlokee Member Posts: 2,378 ■■■■□□□□□□They can be used to connect 2 routers together back to back with a rollover cable at 64kb/s, so I figure they are pretty useful. We have them in the lab because rj-45 patch panels are much cheaper than serial patch panels to work with the wic 1t for example. If you have 2 of them and two router they are a good alternitive to using other serial interfaces with a DTE/DCE cable. The only easy day was yesterday!

pob579 Member Posts: 51 ■■□□□□□□□□why I am asking...
I just started. Playing with images and commands on switches.
So very soon I will come to router connectivity question. Discussions about cables not make big sence for me before I will phisically touch them.
I have 3 switches (2-2924 and 1-2950).
I am waiting for 2-2610 (should come this week)
I just won 2520 on e-bay.
I understand what Paul says for real life env.
I just saw a deal for 10 mentioned above cards for $40. So wanted to know how I can apply it for a lab. Can I simulate the same what WIC--T1 does? -
dtlokee Member Posts: 2,378 ■■■■□□□□□□The problem is going to be using them to build a frame-relay switch, the wic-1dsu-56/64k takes up one WIC slot and to build a frame swithc you'd need a router platform which can take 3-4 or more of these interfaces, if you have a 3620 with 2 nm1e-2w (or anything ***-2w) you could do it. Based on the fact you just bought a 2520 the wic-1t is going to be a better choice because you can use the DTE/DCE cables to connect to it and use it for the frame switch.

pob579 Member Posts: 51 ■■□□□□□□□□I just bought one more guy - 2501 with 16/16 with 12.3.2 from local seller.
The guy who sold it to me told that I can place 2520 in "center" and connect to it 2 2610 and 1 2501. So I will need 3 DB60 cables. Ah... the story for now that I don't know what will come with
2610...
Do I need 2514 for more practice in future (good deal)? I made couple of terminal cables (fun job ). So I don't need it as terminal server, or 4 routers will be really enough for CCNA?
Thanks. -
dtlokee Member Posts: 2,378 ■■■■□□□□□□You can use the 2520 as a frame switch to practice with frame-relay, if you do this the router interfaces will act as layer 2 interfaces and will not have IP addresses (so it will be transparent to the other routers)
an example FS config:
frame-relay switching
!
Interface serial 0
encapsulation frame-relay
frame-relay intf-type dce
clock rate 64000
frame-relay route 102 int serial 1 201
frame-relay route 103 int serial 2 301
frame-relay route 104 int serial 3 401
!
Interface serial 1
encapsulation frame-relay
frame-relay intf-type dce
clock rate 64000
frame-relay route 201 int serial 0 102
frame-relay route 203 int serial 2 302
frame-relay route 204 int serial 3 402
!
Interface serial 2
encapsulation frame-relay
frame-relay intf-type dce
clock rate 64000
frame-relay route 301 int serial 0 103
frame-relay route 302 int serial 1 203
frame-relay route 304 int serial 3 403
!
Interface serial 3
encapsulation frame-relay
frame-relay intf-type dce
clock rate 64000
frame-relay route 401 int serial 0 104
frame-relay route 402 int serial 1 204
frame-relay route 403 int serial 2 304
or somthing like that, basically the dlci 103 would be from router 1 to 3 and 104 would be from 1 to 4. another way to do it and get some benefit from the 2520 would to be to use 3 of the interfaces as DCE (frameswitch) and the 4th as frame dte and use a DTE/DCE cable to connect interface 3 to interface 4... I will post a sample config if you like. The only easy day was yesterday! -
pob579 Member Posts: 51 ■■□□□□□□□□Thank you.
It's too too early for me. I try to collect an info.
I am succesfully working on subneting(theory), basic commands, image update, backup with a switch. Didn't boot yet my first 2501.
Beside that I got new job offer today that is very good. But hiring manager told me honestly he doesn't need Cisco specialist in his dep. They have Cisco dep. He told that Cisco stuff will be very benefitial for my job. But he prefer me to go with Microsoft further. They even promise X raise for MCSA and Y for MCSE if I will do it until November.
I have some MCPs but after touching Cicso for couple of weeks I really "felt in love" with it.
So today I put my 2924 to the closet and left only 2950 and 2501. Yesterday I received my Cisco Press Library today bought additional routers. And after all that cool job offer with my Microsoft stuff . I am long time in Lan administration. And just understood that Cisco piece of puzzel is what I need now. But ... Probably I have to do first MCSA for them and myself.
Hope I will have time to continue with Cisco. I guess INTRO will not be SO tough for me and will help for MCSA too.
This is the situation.
The conclusion I made: that even if I will not go to exams this year I can get important knowledge and my lab will only make me up in my networking job.
Ooops! Crasy long post. Moderator Please remove if takes toomuch space -

But then come back and get (or finish, if you do INTRO) the CCNA and then quietly see if the Cisco Dept will pay you

mgeorge Member Posts: 774 ■■■□□□□□□□Well right now I'm sitting in a parking lot being the bored person that I typically am but any who,
the WIC-1DSU-56K is actually very benificial, practice dialer profiles, dialer profile options,
ACL's as well as Dial on demand. But any thing other than that, its pretty worthless
Personally one of the most benificial things I teach is T1-IMA, grouping 2
or more T1 links into a single logical link or more. I see this used in the field everyday.
when a small company uses a T1 and its not enough but a t3 is too much, so they just
but another T1 link and group it and wahla!!! 3Mbps up/down
I'm sure with vista's version of the MCSE on the horizon, 2k3 would be great to get right about now. Hopefully ms offers a 2 exam route to upgrade ^_^
Any who I gotta make like a banana and split. There is no place like 127.0.0.1 -
toddwoo Member Posts: 1 ■□□□□□□□□□if you have a 3620 with 2 nm1e-2w (or anything ***-2w) you could do it.
So its possible to use them in a FR switch? One router with 4 of them will work? I'm trying to get a proof of consept working with just 2 in 1 router and 2 other routers. I don't want to spend the cash on a NM ---2W to add the extra WIC it I can't get it to work.. especially because a Cisco NM-4A/S 4 port is almost the same price even with the cables.
.. but it's not working.. . If its possible I'll keep working.. I just want to be sure i'm not attempting the impossible. -
Netstudent Member Posts: 1,693 ■■■□□□□□□□Or if you had the extra cash you could get one of these. I wanted to get this so bad but I already spent all my money on a rack. this thing sold for so cheap..BOO!
