Has anyone ever heard of anyone doing business by providing custom network maps and diagrams. So for like small to mid sized companies that don't have an IT staff.
Just a thought?

Usually this is a service that someone performs as a part of being the IT staff (i.e. consultant). Would you be doing anything else? Or merely mapping the network for them?

    'i' before 'e' except after 'c'.... weird?

I can provide some experience here as I work for a IT consultancy, engineering and support firm all rolled into one.

Typically, first of all, customer relationships are built up. This could be through resellership of a product line, where a quotation could be produced for the installation and maybe of future support? The sales guys/girls maintain relationships and contacts, this is incredibly important and it shouldnt need to be explained why. The quality of service provided needs to be of a high standard, deadlines need to be kept, typically many companies that provide services hold the most noted quality recognition certifications. Of course engineer resources are then allocated (this is where the work begins).

Systems Analysis is the most important stage of any proposal and this ties in with your question. Explaining to a business how their current systems operate and how you can improve it is the ONLY way they will listen.

In short, producing network diagrams of current systems and then proposed systems will only work if you have a solid partnership with a firm with all the resources above. I do know of some guys who do this very thing, my company actually contracts through a few of them.

    Hope that makes some sense.

If you gave a network diagram to a company that dont have a IT bod on site they probably wouldnt understand it anyway!

you oculd probably find a few people that would pay for that but i wouldn't count on making a living off of it.
Fantastic. The project manager is inspired.
