What next...

I just finished off the last of the 5 core certifications that I wanted from CompTIA, and now I'm looking at taking the following certs: CTT+ (Certified Technical Trainer), IT Project+, and HTI+ (Home Technology Integrator). I'm looking for input from anyone who has taken any of these certs, and what value is placed on them.

As you can see on the left, I don't have any of the certs you mentioned. I've been looking into the CTT cert and it seems to be very doable, I expected a lot more of it. There is nothing technical about it, but if you want to teach it will definitely be a good basis.

The HTI+ seems very interesting, but a waste of time and money if you are not actually going to do something with (job or automate your own home).

Have you considered other certs than form CompTIA? Planet3's CWNA would compliment your list of certs nicely, but so would CCNA/P or MCSA/E

I'm currently employed as an IT Specialist/Trainer for student technicians, and I also provide IT support and handle service calls for the same company. The company I work for pays for all CompTIA certs I want to take, including instruction material and Transcenders practice exams... I figure as long as it's free why not take advantage of it.

In the end, as long as I have a job working on some aspect of computers that pays decently I'll be happy.

Note: I also have extensive self-taught VB skills that I would like to get some formal recognition for - see:

In that case, considering your job role, I'd go for the CTT+ before taking any of the other remaining.

hey... ur in hamilton. geez man. Know what happened 3 years ago? I got this job offer from Bell's offices there and they said they'd give a decent job with some really good benifits. So I went all the way down there and had an interview with the guy and they go "well thanks for comming, but the position we just offered has been filled but we can get you a place in guelph with one of our subsidiaries ". geez! I go: do you guys think I want to work in a farm?

I really liked hamilton: the scenery and especially the bldg they were in.... but 2 bad... I had to cataplut all the way to the other side of the world to get a job.

There is a VB specific certification. It's called MCSD, www.microsoft.com/traincert/mcp/mcsd, but make sure you keep an eye out for subsequent versions of VB.net
