Yes, 64-bit operating systems, such as Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit Edition, do support running 32-bit applications. However, not every driver or component that a 32-bit software application needs to run may be compatible with the 64-bit OS. Non-Microsoft Installer-based installation programs might also have problems on a 64-bit OS, but it is more likely a security permissions issue.

What 32-bit application are you trying to install? Are you installing it using Administrator privilege? And is it the installer or the application itself that throwing an error?

Thank for your response, a typical example is trying to install the Microsoft encarta 2007 software in a DVD on the system with the Vista Ultimate. This particular Encarta was installed on my XP Pro Machine b4 the purchase of this Laptop with Vista Ultimate. Thanks
