newbie question

Hi all. Great forum.
I have these 2 routers connected in the following manner.

R1
R2
HUB
PC
s0/0(dte)(192.168.2.11/24)
s0/0(dce)(192.168.2.10) fe0/0(192.168.1.10/24)
(192.168.1.2/24)

I want to be able to boot R1 using a tftp image residing on PC through R2 because R1 doesn't have any ethernet interface.
For that I have added a static route from R1 to PC and here's the output of "show ip route" of both routers.
R1#sh ip route
Codes: C - connected, S - static, R - RIP, M - mobile, B - BGP
D - EIGRP, EX - EIGRP external, O - OSPF, IA - OSPF inter area
       N1 - OSPF NSSA external type 1, N2 - OSPF NSSA external type 2
       E1 - OSPF external type 1, E2 - OSPF external type 2
       i - IS-IS, su - IS-IS summary, L1 - IS-IS level-1, L2 - IS-IS level-2
       ia - IS-IS inter area, * - candidate default, U - per-user static route
       o - ODR, P - periodic downloaded static route

Gateway of last resort is not set

S 192.168.1.0/24 [1/0] via 192.168.2.10
C 192.168.2.0/24 is directly connected, Serial0/0
R2#sh ip route
Codes: C - connected, S - static, R - RIP, M - mobile, B - BGP
D - EIGRP, EX - EIGRP external, O - OSPF, IA - OSPF inter area
       N1 - OSPF NSSA external type 1, N2 - OSPF NSSA external type 2
       E1 - OSPF external type 1, E2 - OSPF external type 2
       i - IS-IS, su - IS-IS summary, L1 - IS-IS level-1, L2 - IS-IS level-2
       ia - IS-IS inter area, * - candidate default, U - per-user static route
       o - ODR, P - periodic downloaded static route

Gateway of last resort is not set

C 192.168.1.0/24 is directly connected, FastEthernet0/0
C 192.168.2.0/24 is directly connected, Serial0/0
The problem is that I can ping left and right through all connected routes, but not PC -> R1 and vice versa.
Any idea what I am missing here?

    supercooldude,

    Questions:
    1. What kind of cable are you using to connect R2 to the Hub?
    2. What kind of cable are you using to connect the Hub to PC?
    3. What speed does the Hub operate at?

I would also say that if it's a used router and nothing else works try doing a sh ip access-lists. If it's a used router someone may have put an access-list blocking icmp on it

    1. cat 5e straight through.
    2. cat 5e straight through.
    3. 100M.
I have no problem communicating between R2 and PC.
The problem is in that R2 doesn't route traffic between R1 and PC.

The routers are used but I made sure to erase startup-config before doing anything, so I have no access lists configured on either router.

    supercooldude,

    Question:
    1. Is there some sort of uplink/crossover port on the hub that you're connecting to R2?

    On R1 instead of ...
    S 192.168.1.0/24 [1/0] via 192.168.2.10

    how about trying...
    (config)#ip route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 s0/0 192.168.2.10

    ?

Did you set R2 as the default gateway for the PC?

Cucumber is right on...you need a default gateway set on the PC for the ICMP packets to return to R1

    Thanks guys for the replies.

The trick was to set R2 as default gateway on the PC and it worked.

Now I can ping PC from R2 and R2 from PC.

The problem that I have now is that I cannot access the internet when I change my default gateway to R2. Btw, I have a broadband router connected on the other NIC of the PC, something like this:

    R1
    R2
    HUB
    PC
    BB Router ---- Internet
    s0/0(dte)(192.168.2.11/24) ---- s0/0(dce)(192.168.2.10) fe0/0(192.168.1.10/24)
    NIC1(192.168.1.2/24) NIC2(192.168.0.2/24)
    (192.168.0.1/24)

I need to be able to access the Internet and at the same time have R1 boot tftp from PC. Is there a way to do so?

    supercooldude,

Which operating system is running on the PC?

If you want to use the Internet at the same time as you do your lab, you will have to restore the default gateway setting to whatever it was before changing it.

And then, issue an static route in your PC, like for Windows2000, in a cmd console:

    route add 192.168.2.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.10

You dont need the Internet to use tftp. All you need is installing a tftp server on your PC.

Wow, I didn't know you could add static routes in Windows. Btw, I use XP SP2, can I do it?

    XP SP2.

    supercooldude,

For Microsoft Windows XP SP2, only one NIC can be active at a time. You're going to need a Microsoft Server operating system to have two or more NICs active at the same time.

I guess the command should work in XP too, otherwise just type
    route
at a console and it will spit the correct syntax

    tech-airman,

Really icon_confused.gif ? I do have 2 active NICs, both configured with static IP addresses, but only one default gateway at a time.

I tried adding a static route in XP but I couldn't ping R1. I gotta go to work now but I'll give it another try when I get back.

Thanks guys for all the help. Will let you know how I did.
