Assigning static ip

binarysoulbinarysoul Member Posts: 993
If I want to assign a server a static IP, what changes, if any, are necessary on DNS server after I've confirmed the IP is not in the DHCP pool.

What steps in general are needed before we tell a branch office they can use the static IP.

Statically configured clients dynamically update their A and PTR resource records every time they start and then every 24 hours in case the records become corrupted or need to be refreshed in the DNS database.

Although it is the DHCP client service on a coomputer that updates the DNS records, the computer itself does not need to actually obtain an IP Address from a DHCP server.

You may still need to create static records if you need more than an A or PTR record for the particular client.
All things are possible, only believe.
