Has anyone achieved the MCDST? It looks like it might me the perfect cert for me cos I'm looking for support/helpdesk jobs and this cert is apparently a big jump to get there. Does anybody know what books are available for it as I can't find any?

The exams have not been released yet. That is why you can't find anything on them. It was in the beta stages a few weeks ago. You can expect a few more months before it is released to the public. I took the beta exams, and I can tell you it focuses mainly on your ability to troubleshoot XP Pro, and Office XP inside and out. You can check this link for the objectives, and study up on your own. Then, when they do release the exam, you'll have a heads-up on it. As far as doing helpdesk/support, this could be a good start for you. You already have A+ and Net+, along with 70-270, which is XP itself. You should do fine when it is released. I'm sure all the major publishers will have a book to study. For now, I would recomend moving towards MCSA. You only need two exams for that(70-215/70-21

Use this link to transfer your A+/Net+ credit towards MCSA
