Installing self-signed certificate

For you cert-junkies...

I've had experience installing 'purchased' certificates (ie, verisign) on both certificate authorities and stand-alone webs servers, but have never had the opportunity to play with 'self-signed' certs.

If, on a server, I create a self-signed cert, is it automatically imported? or do I still need to open the MMC and import the cert?

I've already used the MMC to export the root cert, and have it installed on a couple test clients. Connectivity is still an issue, so I'm wondering if I still need to import the root.

Any thoughts appreciated.
