metro ethernet connection 6500

larkspurlarkspur Member Posts: 235
trying to bring up an metro ethernet circuit. I have an d-link transciever that takes teh fiber and hands it off ethernet. I am good on layer 1, link lights etc. the issue is i am settign this up on a 6509 in hybird mode. I created a vlan and assigned the switchport to the vlan. The VLAN is up,up

There is no trunking and no need to set the speed as the SP is rate-limiting the metro to 100 meg.

done on the sp
set vlan 160 port 4/27

done on the rp
int vlan 160
ip 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
no shut

i helped setup a metro e connection not long ago in the same senerio we actually configured the port connecting to the connection as a routed port.

may i ask why are you still running this switch in hybrid rather than native

    because CatOS rocks!!!!

seriously, becasue I haev not gotten around to it. Dude we just upgraded the sup fom 1A's to 720's. which was long but really cool....

So on the switchport was setup as routed in hybird mode?

    set port ....

i mean the VLAN interface is doing the Layer 3.

can you post the setup or throw me a bone. I am stilling researching....

basically the port was configured as

    int g3/2
    no switchport
    ip add 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.240
    speed 100
    du full

this was a sup 720 that we converted over to native IOS which took a little bit of time also during the upgrade we also had ran into platform issues in which we had to get some flash cards for the image that supported all of the modules

so that was done on a switch in native mode.

    thanks for the reply......

ok, not sure about this but apparently I need dot1q-tunnel.

I did not have to run this command on teh last metro i brought up. Also only certian linecards support this adn sup 720's.

does that make sense to anyone?

I am lookign for supporting documentation so I can read up on it..

ok, if its just a plain metro-e connection theres no need to put it in a vlan or trunk.. we actually went through the same issues and just settled for a plain routed port and created an subnet for it

I did that. i jacked into my 3845 on gig 0/1 gave it an ip add and on the 6506 did away with the switchport and just assigned an ip address in the same subnet as the the other side.
I have no arp, vtp, or stp.

TAC said move the connections to the etehrnet ports on my sup's. I am still in disbelief at this..

I am tired for today. I will have to address tomorrow.

thanks for hanig in there with me..

oh this is provided by at&t, if that matters.

to bring this to a close.

dot1qtunnel has to be setup for these connections on both sides.

Becasue I use WS-X6748 linecards there is no support for the dot1qtunnel feature. There is however in the SUP 720's (don't know about the others).

So both my metro ethernet connections had to be provisoned for dot1qtunnel. This is teh first time for me as the other metro connection I brought online did not have to be tunneled.

    3 days and finally connecitivty.

Thanks man, it took alot of time and research and ultimatley a call to TAC, but that is why you pay for smartnet on you core switches....

And I learned a lot more than I knew.

Now I need to budget a line card that supports dot1qtunnel for next year. Can't have that connection sitting in my active sup in case something happens you know!!

    :D
