What should I build?

I'm thinking about building something as a hobby and looking for some creative ideas. I've read some build small robots, small engines, flying object and many more. Have you built anything interesting that you always talk about? Do you have any experience to share?

I plan to put in $500 initially, but I can add more if the 'build' becomes interesting.

I have been thinking of building a home network. Getting cat6 strung through the walls or wireless. Getting one central computer to play mp3s for my other pcs and my xbox 360.

Or you could always build a nice 1969 Dodge Charger. Thats kinda expensive though.
