Cracking wep.....

I'd like to play around with cracking wep. I have a live linux security distro (backtrack2) with all the software i'd need, i'm just not sure how to go about doing it. Does anyone know of a decent guide? Most of what i find is from like 2005 and earlier, and seems to be a bit outdated.

This is because WEP is now many years old. There have been minor improvement in the speed at which WEP can be cracked, but the method is the same as it was years ago.

Just set up a WAP using WEP and a real easy key and see how quickly WEPCrack (or other) program discovers the key. Change the WAP to use progressively more complex and longer WEP keys and see how the cracking time increases.

I was wondering if its possible to use other cards besides orinocco or prism2 card anymore?

All of the popular wireless scanning/sniffing programs specify which chipsets they can use. I'm currently using a D-Link DWL-G122 with the Ralink RT2500 chipset and most everything seems to work with it. Check the Web page and user forums of the program you are interested in using to determine if it works with your wireless NIC.
