computer parts + carpet = ?

Okay, so i'm wondering if its generally safe to lay your computer parts (bare, on protection) on your carpeted floor. it seems to be pretty obvious to me, but i see people on ebay & other forums selling thigns and they'll put the item (ie, RAM) on the carpet to take pictures. This is not something i would do.. I've always thought/been told that its not really recommended to work on computers in a carpeted area because of static electricity.. so uh.. what... (being grounded obviously helps there)
Fantastic. The project manager is inspired.

Not a good idea, static electricity degrades the lifetime of components, can cause immediate failure
but in most cases it degrades and hence people are oblivious to the problem.
Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$

Most components are robust enough now to withstand being placed on a carpet for a few moments however I wouldnt recommend it or do it myself.

Just not worth the risk imo.

Maybe we'll see some items on ebay soon photographed on the pool side? Down the pub? Being 'carefully looked after' by the family pet?
