Telecommuting question

I have a fried who is an IT recruiter and he's been trying to convince me to look into jobs in the DC area. Apparently, he knows of several jobs which I will soon be qualified for that involve telecommuting 4 days a week, then driving in 1 day a week. I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland so the drive/metro will be about 3 hours one way, but that doesn't concern me very much.
My question is this- what advantage does a telecommuting position offer the COMPANY. It seems like a significant benefit for the employee...which always makes me nervous.
Just curious.

You will probably use a temporary cubical your one day in-office that is shared with other employees on their day in-office. You will connect from home to Terminal Server via a VPN and at the office using a thin client (when you aren't in meetings). It's all very efficient if the business is organized to use it well.
