I am reading Todd Lammle's books, and all the local schools in my area are either too far away or just boot camps. I have a newborn son so it is hard for me to travel to class constantly. I was wondering if I can take the Cisco Academy online? If not, is there a online course that is up to par with the Exams.. I know most online sites are probably scams and I want to be able to learn it.
Im sure some of you will say to create my own lab.. But Once i create the lab, where do i get the testing tools - training and set up IOS etc. How much will i REALISTICALLY spend on my own lab. What do i need a couple 2700's and a 2900 switch?

flipmad Member Posts: 184I just called Cisco and they said there is no online Academy.
I went to the local college and they do the Cisco academy. Talked with the Professor and they dont even use the equipment. Everything is simulators.. He just talks off a slide show and answers questions and then has them do the books..
So if I buy equipment what should I buy? Do i just get the Cisco Press books and they will develop the scenerios for testing myself and training? -
dynamik Banned Posts: 12,312 ■■■■■■■■■□If you have the money to spend on CA, you should get the CBT Nuggets and/or Train Signal videos. You might want to also consider picking up the www.thebryantadvantage.com CCNA study guide. I believe that has various lab scenarios that you can work through yourself. The Cisco Press books should be the foundation of your studies though.

That's sad.... Time have changed, and not for the better.
We had a full lab setup in high school with 4 workstations, 4 routers and 4 switches. The course a combination of instructor lead teaching then logging in to the online curriculum. We were able to access the online portion from home and everything.... It really was a great course, and being a high school course it was all free to me. -

I like CBT Nuggets myself, but heard good things about Trainsignal. I watched a few Trainsignal for BCMSN but I didn't think they were as good as the CBT Nuggests. An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made. -

Sorry, I should clarify. The Bryant Guide is not CBT, it's his study package. He's the instructor in the Train Signal series. Some people like TS better, others prefer the nuggets. I'm personally going to go with both because I am an absolute novice when it comes to Cisco.
Three days of lab access is pretty generous. You usually pay something around $30 for an 8-hour block. -
flipmad Member Posts: 184Yeah i could probably use them all too. I like the videos because I have slight ADD and reading and reading and reading just doesnt sink in because it burns me out a bit... is train signal CBTS?
I want a DVD...I stare at a computer all day, and I would love to just plug it into my DVD player and just watch it over my big screen.
do these possibly come in DVD format? I dont have SVideo cables with my TV set up to my computer -

My academy was through the local community college and offered the classes with an instructor and a self-paced online version that used blackboard.com and email. Both methods give you access to the lab. Another community college nearby only offers instructor led courses. And the Community College with the CCNP courses just started an online option since they filled one of the classes and had more students that wanted it.

The Lab was open from 6 or 7 in the morning to 11pm or Midnight at night. Final exams were proctored in the schools proctored exam center.
I met my teacher once face-to-face when I went to use the lab while he was teaching the regular class. And I only saw one of my classmates twice, once when we went to the lab at the same time and then again at the test center when we took the CCNA exam 3 days after our last academy final exam.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -

I actually went to the local college here in Tampa - HCC. They only have an instructor led course that is 2 days a week for 4 hours. But it is 8 months long and it sarts at the very basics. you HAVE to attend the course.
We have 2 other schools that do 3 days a week with 8 hours on Saturdays. But you HAVE to attend the course.
The others are Boson, fast train and list any other Boot Camp that will try to take your money.
Fast train was the only one that had 6-8 weeks of saturday classes. But they wanted me to take some BS Windows XP course as a prerequestie and take some extra money for a course i dont need -

blake15,
As a Cisco Networking Academy Program semester 4 graduate, for each of the semesters, there is a "hands-on final" that must be proctored by a human being at the Cisco Networking Academy location. Therefore, the Cisco Networking Academy program cannot be completed on an online basis.
Here are some benefits of being a Cisco Networking Academy graduate/Alumni:- Unlimited access to the online curriculum at http://cisco.netacad.net even if the material and exams changes over time.
- A possible discount voucher code for the exams.
- An extension to take the "old exam" even after exam retirement.
- Downloading and using their Packet Tracer program that is their networking device simulator from Cisco, the same people who make the networking devices.
- The Hands-on finals will prove not only to the exam proctor that you know your stuff but to yourself as well.
