Does anyone know which command is correct for refreshing group policy on XP? is it :

secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy
or
gpupdate /target:computer
or do both work?

Its both, but gpupdate is preferred. Here's a quote from the help of secedit. Type secedit /? in XP to see it yourself
The secedit /refreshpolicy command has been replaced with the gpupdate command. For information about how to refresh security settings, see Gpupdate.

and here's a quote from the gpupdate help section
Refreshes local and Active Directory?based Group Policy settings, including security settings. This command supersedes the now obsolete /refreshpolicy option for the secedit command.

Only gpupdate will refresh the GPO on a Windows XP computer. Secedit is now only used to Security Analysis and Configuration.
