internship inqiury?? any advise?

hello all,
has anyone used or had any dealings with paid internships to acquire tech. certs.?
any and all advise is certainly welcome...
i have 20+ years experience in the telecommunications industry, i have no degree just started out in telecom when telecom degree's were non existant and worked my way up through the electrical and mechanical engineering groups, even the technical training center. by doing this i got real lazy when it came to higher education and failed to further my collegiate career. to make a long story sad and short, i got laid off and now im trying to get back into the telecom groove, but keep getting turned down because i dont have the invalueable piece of paper.
