what is master slave and cable select?

- master slave cable select - what r they? what do they do?? whats it for??

all i know is its some sort of setting.

These settings are designated on the hard drive

Master is the primary device for a specific IDE Channel

Slave is the secondary device for a specific IDE Channel

Cable select is utilizes the position on the cable to designate whether the device is considered the Master or Slave of the channel. Top position - Master Second position - Slave
