Hi, I am in the process of studying for my ICND1 exam. Maybe some of you may be able this question:

Which area of the OSI model and the TCP/IP stack is most diverse?

a. network layer
b. transport layer
c. application layer
d. data link layer

I am getting two different answers from the study material from the global knowledge self-study.

Thanks in advance

I would vote for Application layer. It exists in both OSI and TCP/IP model.

Basically, you have tons of protocols running in the Application layer. There are the commonly-tested ones like SMTP, HTTP, DNS, SNMP, Telnet, FTP and then the not-so-commonly-tested ones: BitTorrent, Messenger, XBoxLive, BITS, etc...

I think it's a poorly-worded question. What do they mean by diverse?

The "diverse" threw me off too. :) One part of the study material would say application layer and the other part states data link layer.

I was leaning towards the application layer. Thanks for confirming!

It's annoying how of these questions are phrased in a confusing manner. My boss (who is a hardcore networking guy with 10+ years exp.) got one of the questions wrong. It was phrased with similar ambiguity.

Wow, I thought the questions my study material had were bad.
