Alright so I've been trying to find a job to put me on track to what I want to do. My current job has a computer repair shop but I highly doubt that they will put me there because the company is under staffed. I have asked to work in the repair shop and I have gotten a few chances but I don't think I'll be able to transfer in there. So I've came across a job and it looks like this is what I would like to do but I'm not sure if its right for me to start off with. This is the job description:
Information Technology Support – 2/5’s or 40% position. Assisting to maintain the computer and phone systems. Includes basic individual and small group training, management of email address books and distribution lists, organization of network drives, liaison to computer and phone vendors and consultants, setting up work stations, basic maintenance, some minor clerical duties, etc. Excellent computer skills, knowledge, and troubleshooting; ability to use and learn new software, and analytical thinking skills required. IT experience a plus.
I don't understand why they include training but require the skills. Is it that they want someone with a more of a solid foundation with computer skills? I don't want to submit a résumé and find out that I don't even qualify. I did try to call Human Resources many times but no one has answered.

networker050184 Mod Posts: 11,962 ModI believe you are correct about them wanting someone with a good foundation. They are probably willing to train but its easier to train someone with a knowledge base rather then having nothing to build on. Why do you not want to apply? You definitely won't get the job if you don't apply...An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made.

freetech Member Posts: 154My guess is that they're not talking about training you, they want you to be willing and able to train their customers.
Training is a highly profitable revenue stream for many companies. They like it because it's almost pure profit. No parts, no warranty, and they'll usually charge an arm and a leg for you to go train the customer for your normal salary. The nice thing is, being good at training is a good way to get ahead, because you're seen as a revenue producer.
Anyways, there's one way to find out. Apply and ask. If you don't get it, you've lost nothing and gained some interview experience. Test the waters, man. Find out what's out there.
Good luck!Experience is a harsh teacher. She gives the test first, the lesson afterwards. -
dynamik Banned Posts: 12,312 ■■■■■■■■■□It sounds like they want someone who will train other employees. They probably just want you to sit down with a few people and go over Word, Outlook, etc.. If you consider that it's one of many tasks in a 40% IT job, I don't think it's going to be anything as involved as training customers.

jamesleecoleman Member Posts: 1,899 ■■■■■□□□□□My bad I also forgot to put that its a hospital but its the childrens part. I didn't put down the name because I didn't want someone on this board to some how decrease my chance of possible employment on top of the others in the city. I don't mean to sound greedy. So I'm going to put turn in the résumé and the cover letter later on. I'm not trying to seem lazy here but I've done some research about salary and wages. Yet I don't know what to ask for in wages. I currently like 7.25/hr and I've read on the forums to ask for a range so I'm thinking like 7.75-9.00/hr. I'm working on my associates degree in network administration along with my a+/linux+/network+ but it's like what I looked up online is more than I should be asking for. Also I plan on joining the MIARNG (Michigan Army Reserve National Guard) with the MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) 25U (Signal Support Systems Specialist) found here: http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=245 sometime soon. I think this will help me on my way with the technology end of things along with I think a secret security clearence. I'm not trying to look like a little kid here.Booya!!

networker050184 Mod Posts: 11,962 ModIf you join the Army don't go 25U. I'd go for 25B or 25N if you want a career in IT.An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made.

jamesleecoleman Member Posts: 1,899 ■■■■■□□□□□I was looking at 25B but I thought it would be best to be a more of a well rounded person as a 25U. I goto the military.com forums and check out the Signal threads there but its like no one posts on there alot. In Michigan for the ARNG there is a 20,000 bonus for 25U as part as the MOS critical list. I'm not trying to be greedy its just that I need some way to pay for college as well. So I can get the civilian education promotion points filled in. I was looking at 25U even in regular Army because it looked like the MOS isn't focused on just one thing. I'll check out 25N.Booya!!

networker050184 Mod Posts: 11,962 Mod25U may sound nice on paper, but you won't really get any IT experience with that MOS. 25Us pretty much just work on radios and other similar systems. The 25Bs usually do the systems admin type of the job such as server and desktop support. The 25N works in your network nodes, heavy into Cisco, Promina, Callmanager and some firewall admin. An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made.

Would 25F be in there with 25N working with eachother?? I don't really mind going for 25U. Its kinda hard when there are three MOS's that are in the same field to choose from. What is your MOS?Booya!!

networker050184 Mod Posts: 11,962 Mod25F is being phased out, replaced by 25N. Most 25F switched to 25N which included going to training for the new equipment. 25U is not very IT oriented so if you are looking for IT experience 25U is not the way to go.
I spent my time as 31F which switched to 25F and finaly to 25N.
No matter what MOS you pick you will only get out of it as much as you put in. Just ensure when there are things to be done you do them or at least help. A lot of the guys I worked with didn't know a router from their @$$ even though it was their job (just left more experience for me to gain so I didn't mind much). I on the other hand learned all I could and ensured if there were configurations to be done I did them. If there was an issue with the network I always tried to be the one to come up with a solution. I got a great deal from my military experience, but I know many who got nothing.
Also when you get out with the experience there will be many government contractors knocking down your door to hire you to support the systems you worked on during your time in the military. Good luck on what ever path you choose! An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made. -
