Router Bootup - Baud Rate

This may is a very basic question but can you connect to a router running on a different baud rate aside from 9600?
The reason why I'm asking this when I bought a DB9-USB cable and connected my router, all I get are garbled characters on boot up. Runs fine when connected to my PC's COM port.
Haven't tried changing the baud rate yet but will try that later when I get home. If you're getting garbled characters, does it mean that your connection's too fast for the router?
TIA.

If you can't communicate after setting all these in your terminal, you may want to try setting your router config back to factory settings. All this assumes you're talking about a home lab, not production equipment.Experience is a harsh teacher. She gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.
