Looks like they are using the word "Appended" in place of "Incremental".
An incremental backup has to do with the backup job. It only backs up what has changed since the last backup job was one.
When you append a backup it is dealing with the tape. When you append a backup job to a tape it starts backing up data to the tape were the last backup job left off. the other option is to overwite the tape. The backup job starts at the beginning of the tape and overwrites whatever is there.

Same here. It's easy to see why the OP was confused. I was answering based on the Server+ objectives, which doesn't seem to use standard terminology.
