Question about exchange server

I have a test domain controller and an exchange server up and running.

My question is , if I want to send emails to someone outside my domain like the internet I will need a registered domain name right?

right now I can send emails back and forth internally but when i tried sending it to my yahoo account the email failed. I was wondering it might be because I don't have a registered domain name?

    Exchange 2003:
Register an internet domain and have internet dns.
Register A record to point to the IP Address of your Exchange server with a public IP
Register MX record to point to the A record
Create PTR record for your sending server
Create SPF record so mail servers configured to do SenderID blocking won't block you
Configure Virtual SMTP server to allow anonymous authentication
Configure SMTP Connector to send mail to *
Configure Recipient Policies to allow the domains you wish to receive/send mail
You can use the Internet Mail wizard to configure the SMTP Virtual Server and Internet SMTP Connector for you

    Exchange 2007:
Register an internet domain and have internet dns.
Register A record to point to the IP Address of your Exchange server with a public IP
Register MX record to point to the A record
Create PTR record for your sending server
Create SPF record so mail servers configured to do SenderID blocking won't block you
    Create Accepted Domains
    Create E-mail Address Policies
Create an Internet Send Connector that sends mail to *
On your Default Receive Connector, allow Anonymous Authentication
