DMI is very similar to SNMP. DMI is designed to run on desktop systems which don't usually have the horsepower to run resource-intensive SNMP code.

The DMI is an API that provides network managers with information about workstations on the network. The primary objective is to reduce network managers' workloads by providing them with vital workstation information, and assisting them with configuration and updating tasks.

DMI is a layer of abstraction between system components and the software that manages them. The System Management BIOS (SMBIOS) is an extension of the Basic Input Output System (BIOS) that formulates and delivers this information to the operating system.
