Unable to copy flash from TFTP

kadshahkadshah Member Posts: 388 ■■■□□□□□□□
I just upgraded my router to 16D/16F memory. After a reboot
I was at the <boot> prompt. I did a sh ver to verify if the
memory was upgraded, it was. The next thing I noticed was
that next to the amount of memory it says (Device not programmable)
If I try and do a copy tftp flash this is what I get.

AVANI(boot)#copy tftp flash
ERR: Device in READ-ONLY state

I was able to do a copy tftp flash while I
was in Rom monitor mode but the IOS
was loaded the TFTP server and not from flash.
Did I get the wrong memory module?
Any ideas what I am doing wrong here?

I had the same issue. You have to go into "boot" mode, I believe. In this mode, the memory is writable.

Here is the guide I used:

    http://www.sdnp.undp.org/rc/areas/tech/setup/cisco-upgrade.html

You can skip the beginning, it's about setting up a TFTP server on Linux. Just do a CRTL+F and look for "read only", above that is the config-register command you will need, then you reload and do everything as normal IIRC, don't forget to return your config-register to default (0x2102).

im guessing since you said you can load from the tftp server,
you can try this: load ios from tftp server from rom mode (and change the confreg), then once you loaded the ios,
do an erase flash command, to delete the ios stored in the flash, then copy the ios from the tftp server to the flash.

also stated above, make sure your config register is defualt

After spending about 3hrs trying to get this to work and following your link and intructions
nothing worked. I booted from ROM mode and from there I was able to see the Read/Write.
But every time I tried deleting the flash I got a erase failed message and I couldn't get the copy tftp flash to work. I must have done this at least 5 times. I knew I was able to comunicate with the tftp server but couldn't understand why I was getting "......" instead of "!!!!!".
I was so frustrated I went to the fridge for a beer. My wife laughed at me and couldn't believe
I was studying and drinking at the same time. Anyway after about 1/2 hr I went back for one more try.
I typed the erase command again got the same message but then something different happened my tftp server (i use pumpkin) ask for permission to download the file I needed. I accepted and it worked. It wasn't magic, I know I must have screwed up somewhere. Sometimes when you can't figure out what you're doing wrong it's best just to walk away from the computer give yourself a break and organize your thoughts.
    Thanks for helping me outicon_smile.gif

I just ran into the same problem again. I went to upgrade a 2501 router (i think it was the same one giving me problems before) and did a copy tftp flash. Whenever I do a copy tftp flash when I
get to the "erasing device" I get all eeeeeeeee's and then it stops and says not erased copy aborted erase failed. This was the same problem I had before. So I reset the flash and Dram the first time and it took care of the problem but not this time. Here's the output of the sh flash:

    R2_2501(boot)#sh flash

    System flash directory:
    No files in System flash

Just wondering if the flash is bad. Is this 3rd party memory might that be the reason?
It worked fine before I did the upgrade.
    I'm trying to upgrade to c2500-is-l.123-19.bin (15.5MBs)[/b]

the problem was a bad memory stick.
after I uploaded the new IOS image i shut down the router
and put back the bad memory in the slot. The output in the sh flash
is a total of 16MB's but for some reason the bad memory can't
do an erase but the other one could. That's why I kept getting this output.

    %Error: System flash bank 0 chip 0 unknown, chip id 0xFFFF (reversed = 0xFFFF)

    %Error: System flash bank 0 chip 1 unknown, chip id 0xFFFF (reversed = 0xFFFF)
